Our Top Tips To Upscale Your Home

Obviously, we at Blind Concepts are all about how to make your windows look good, so this is our Number 1 Tip to upscale your home.

We offer a range of ready and custom-made vertical blinds, roman blinds, oriental, plain or exposed batten and Holland blinds. Our services also cover Venetian blinds that include Aluminium blinds, wood composite blinds, 50mm poly-resin blinds with a timber look finish, and lacquered or oiled cedar blinds.

We can clean, repair, replace or upgrade every blind in your home.

Tip 2

Sometimes your home may just need a colour upgrade. Some colours can be a bit faddish. If you are over the bright yellow of the 70s and mission brown of the 80s why not upgrade to a different shade?

Tip 3

Spruce up your front door. You can do this by changing its colour, updating, or upgrading your door mat, adding a plant on either side, or even tiling, paving or adding faux timber slats.

Tip 4

Add some life to your home’s rooms or outdoor areas by adding some hanging potted plants. They can be pretty flowery offerings or even practical plantings such as herbs you use in the kitchen.

Plants help you clear the air and static energy and even help reduce EMFs from electrical sockets.

Tip 5

Decluttering will give your soul a chance to relax. It has been proven that clutter can cause stress so start to actually let go of some of your stuff. Even letting go of something sentimental but still put away in the cupboard, can open up the flood gates to receiving more than you ever dreamed.

Tip 6

Mow, weed, and clip. You don’t need to spend a lot of money on fancy plantings to have a nice looking yard. You will be surprised how just taking a little time to actually pull those weeds, mow your lawn and clip any low hanging or straggly branches can improve the look and feel of your home.

Tip 7

Rearrange. You know what they say – a change is as good as a holiday. Why not have a go at rearranging the furniture and décor of your home. They say that good Feng Shui in your home starts with the correct placement of these items.

Give it a go and see how you feel. If you don’t like it, change it.

Tip 8

Clean it. If it looks dirty give it a clean. For outside you would be surprised how a high pressure cleaner will bring up your pavers, paths, and driveways.

Tip 9

If it’s broken fix it. Replace torn fly screens, patch holes, and repair fence palings. Give your home some love today!

Blind Repairs For DIY Enthusiasts

If you are a little handy around the home you may find that you are able to repair minor blind issues yourself.

Blind Concepts are the leaders in blind repairs and replacements. We service Brisbane and its surrounding areas and offer today some ways of conducting minor blind repairs.

Please bear in mind we said if you are handy around the home. Some of these tasks should only be attempted by experienced professionals.

Vertical Blinds

These blinds can look great and the beauty of them is you can colour match with your décor.

Today we are going to address some of the common complaints with this style of blind.

Slats Won’t Rotate Or Are Not In Line With Each Other: There are a couple of reasons why this may happen. They may have been hung onto the rails when the hooks were in the closed position or they have snagged against a window catch or door handle, something resting near the blinds, or each other.

In both these cases you need to turn the chain until you hear a clicking noise, keep gently turning until the clicking stops. You may have to pull the chain both ways and complete this clicking exercise.

Once you have done this you should notice that the hooks all face in the same direction, allowing you the opportunity to rehang your louvres.

Venetian Blinds

These blinds look great when clean and in good repair. They do take a little more care and can be quite painful once they are a little worn. A little love will bring them back to their glory, however.

Cleaning Venetian Slats: There is no easy way around doing this at home. The only way to do this is by using a mild detergent and cleaning every single slat. Don’t try those finger slat cleaners; they look good but do very little.

Alternatively, you can take them down and pop them in the bath for a light scrub, then allow them time to dry.

As this job is so painful why not consider taking advantage of our ultrasonic cleaning service?

Creating a Contemporary Style

Stacks of cubes beside beside sphere shape balls
‘Contemporary Style’ is a term that is bandied about quite a bit. It is used a lot but not everyone understands what it means. In essence, a contemporary style is best described as a ‘less is more’ look – it encompasses a range of furnishings but a lot of emphases is placed on a clean, uncluttered look.

The idea is to create a feeling of space and cleanliness in a room. As a result, a lot of thought needs to be put into every piece in the room – even the blinds.

Contemporary Blinds

When it comes to updating the look of a room, starting with the blinds makes sense. Blind Concepts can help you to work with what you have on hand – revamping your old blinds to create contemporary blinds with a great new look at a fraction of the cost of completely new blinds.

Speak to Blind Concepts about a whole new look – they can repair your existing blinds or replace the slats for a completely different look.

Colour Choices

In contemporary decor, colour palettes are kept simple and neutral. There is usually only one focal point per room and this is usually where the colour is concentrated. This could be in the form of a wall hanging, rug, piece of furniture, et cetera.

Using a limited palette creates a much more spacious look.

Uncomplicated

The furniture should have clean lines and little if any decoration. You want a simple look, not a fussy one – this is not the look to go for if you want ruffles and lace. Even the blinds should be kept fairly simple.

Light

In contemporary decor, lighting is the key – make sure that the lighting is dramatic to emphasise the feeling of spaciousness in the room and to perfectly offset the neutral colours.

Mix your Materials

Contemporary decor draws a lot from sleek metallic designs – chrome or brass table lamps can add richness to the room without giving a feeling that it looks over the top.

Look for new ways to decorate – consider glass shelving and table tops to create a more contemporary look and to create a feeling of space.

Art should be fairly modern and framed simply. Black and white photography goes especially well with this particular decor style.

Drawing all these elements can, at first, seem to be confusing but it is actually pretty simple. When considering buying a piece of furniture or an accessory for a room, consider whether or not it will add aesthetic value or just seem to make the room cluttered.

Common Problems with Blinds

Broken white window blinds
When it comes to blinds, there is very little maintenance involved. Things can go wrong, however. Cords can deteriorate and break, slats can snap or bend and runners may need to be replaced from time to time.

You can fix some of these issues, but for others, you will need to call in a professional blinds repair company.

Some Common Problems:

Vertical Blinds

You may find that the stem that holds the slats in place is broken. In some cases, this is going to be quite difficult to repair but with newer blinds, this problem has been given some consideration and the stems are usually replaceable nylon ones.

The easiest way to know is by the age of the blinds – any blinds made prior to 2000 will not have replaceable nylon stems. Another way to tell is by looking at the stem itself – if it has yellowed or won’t come out easily, it is not nylon and repairs should be left to the professionals.

If it is nylon, you can have a go at repairing it yourself if you feel confident enough. Do some research first to make sure that you can find the matching stem. If you are unsure, it is best left to professionals – messing up this repair could mean needing a new set of blinds.

A common problem with vertical blinds is that the cords are subjected to a fair amount of wear and tear and they may snap after a while. This is always caused by friction and can be due to the angle at which the cords are being pulled.

Using the wrong angle causes undue friction on the cord or can make it jump the wheels altogether increasing the likelihood of snapping. Should the cord be pulling tightly, check to see if you can ease it back onto the wheel.

Once the cord has snapped, you have to have the track restrung.

Horizontal Blinds

Valances that fall off tend to be a common problem here and this is usually due to the valance clips breaking. A quick fix is to use a strip of Velcro to put the valance back up. The chances of being able to find the right size clip are slim.

If the cords snap here, you could attempt to fix them with a knot. Restringing will generally be more expensive than having a replacement blind put in, so consider this option carefully.

Cellular Blinds

In general, broken cords are the worst problem here. If your cord is on a continuous loop, it is pretty simple to replace if it breaks. Should the cord not be on a continuous loop, you will have to have it restrung. This may work out costly so get a quote first.

By and large, though, blinds are easy to maintain and not very troublesome at all.

A Budget Friendly Option for Replacing Blinds

Man holding a wallet with money

In today’s world, we tend to live in a throwaway society – if something
starts looking a bit old or is slightly damaged, we tend to throw it out and
replace it.

This is not good for our budgets or the environment and so many people
have started to look for an alternative way of living.

Damaged Blinds

When it comes to blinds, it may seem that there is little alternative to
replacing the entire set because of damage to some of the slats or parts.

Blind Concepts offer a convenient and economic solution to replacing a full
set of blinds. They offer a replacement service.

Basically. they will come in and inspect the blinds. Slats or portions of the
blinds that are too badly damaged are removed and replaced. The undamaged parts
of the blinds are left in place.

Financial Benefits

For the consumer, this means that they are not paying for something that they
don’t need and this can result in significant savings in terms of money and time
– you don’t need to worry about uninstalling your old blinds or re-installing
new ones.

It is also a great way to get your blinds to last that much longer.

Environmental Benefits

For the environment, replacing only the damaged portions means a significant
reduction in waste materials that need to be disposed of. Considering that there
are fewer resources required to replace damaged portions as opposed to whole sets
of blinds, the environmental impact of manufacturing is also reduced.

Revamp the Room

You can also use the replacement service offered by Blind Concepts to create
a fresh new look in a budget-friendly manner. You can choose to have a new set
of slats placed in the existing fittings.

You can choose a different colour, finish or even a different type of
material.

This is a great way to give your room a quick update – replace old fashioned
slats with a more contemporary or classic look that will not date as quickly.

It can also help to create a totally warmer or cooler look in your rooms.
Wooden slats are very good for creating a warmer feel whereas aluminium slats
tend to make a cooler impression.

By using a blind replacement service, you can rest assured that you are
making a wise move financially and an environmentally responsible move as well.
Get a whole new look with a clear conscience and without breaking the bank.

Repairing your Blinds

We all love a New Year with its promise of a fresh start and new beginnings. It is the ideal time to start freshening up your home completely. It’s a great time to apply a lick of paint and smarten up any old blinds.

The unfortunate part is that January does come straight on the heels of Christmas so money may not be flowing as much as you would like. You’ve got to look for ways to save a bit of cash on decor without compromising the quality of the result.

Blind Concepts to the Rescue

If your blinds are looking a little shabby or have broken slats, let Blind Concepts give you a quote on repairing rather than replacing them.

The Advantages of Repairing Blinds

Aside from the obvious savings when it comes to repairing rather than replacing blinds, there are also some great decor advantages as well. Maybe your current blinds are perfect for your decor – finding the perfect replacement may be tough.

You can also choose to change the colour of the slats of the whole blind in order to give your room a quick and easy facelift.

You might even consider replacing the slats with those of a completely different material to bring the look more up-to-date – it’s a great decor tool.

Go Green

It is also a far greener option – instead of creating more rubbish for the landfill by throwing away the whole set of blinds, only the damaged portion is discarded.

It is important to consider the planet when redecorating and this is one way that will not actually cost you more.

Do you Need to Call in Blinds Installers?

Window Blind hook screwed by Specialist

One of the biggest concerns for people when they order blinds is that these blinds will have to be installed. For those of us that are all thumbs when it comes to DIY, this can be a somewhat daunting prospect. You need not be too concerned, however, the installation of blinds is fairly simple but if you do not feel up to the task, you can always get someone in to install the blinds for you.

Any reputable blinds installation company in Brisbane will do but it is best to check with the people that you bought the blinds from in the first place. If they do not offer an installation service themselves, the chances are good that they will be able to provide you with a reference to someone that could do a great job.

If you decide that you want to give it a try yourself, there are some basic rules to follow – if you are willing to go along carefully and put the effort in, you will find it easy to install the blinds yourself.

step 1

Assemble the blinds and measure the distance between the brackets. Put one of the brackets in place and make sure that the bracket is as straight as you can possibly get it. Mark in pencil on the wall where exactly the screws need to go. Measure across where the other bracket needs to go and mark this in the same way.

step 2

The next step is to use a spirit level to make sure that the two marks are level with one another. If your blinds are uneven, they will not be able to hang correctly. If the blinds are very long or very heavy, it is advisable to install a third bracket in the middle of the window in the same manner as before. You will now drill the holes in accordance with the pencil marks and screw the brackets into place. You will then slip the blinds onto the brackets and then close the brackets over them to secure them in place. You will repeat this process for all windows in the room and your blinds in Brisbane will be installed.

As you can see, whether you decide to install your blinds yourself, or you decide to get someone in to do it for you, you will find that blinds are really quick and easy to install. It is likely to be quicker to install blinds than it is to hang curtains.

Blinds Installation for Christmas

Christmas, as always is a time for togetherness and family – a time spent relaxing around the home with your family. Because it is also in the middle of summer, we want to be able to sit outside with our family and guests and catch a breeze to cool down. If it’s possible for our guests to be able to see into our windows, we don’t want them to see that our bed is not made or something else is not tidy, but sometimes this can’t be avoided as some mums have eagle eyes and no qualms about peering through windows!

Woman Peeking through the window blinds

To avoid a disapproving glare from mummy dearest, fitting some privacy blinds on your windows is a good idea. Should anyone want to know why your blinds are down during the day, simply tell them that you are showing them off. Blinds Installation in Brisbane is simple to arrange – ask for professional advice – you may even be able to install them yourself. There is not too much labour involved as in many cases, a person just needs to mark the target areas to make sure that the blind hangs straight and then drilling the relevant holes. Screw the blinds in and retire to enjoy a fresh, cold beer. Or, if that doesn’t appeal to you, call in a blinds installation specialist.

Just make sure that you get it done quickly – it’s nearly time for that big family get together and mum’s disapproving stare. All joking aside, blinds can provide protection from more than just curious stares. They also provide much needed protection against the sun. We all know just how bad the Aussie sun can be in summer and so you really need to consider ways to protect your home from it. At the end of the day, curtains simply do not provide the same level of cover without being bulky and unwieldy.

things to consider before buying blinds

The main disadvantage of blinds in Brisbane is that they come in such a range of styles and colours that you may have trouble deciding which blinds to get. Before setting out on a shopping trip or trawling the internet, it is wise to consider exactly what you are looking for in terms of blinds. Do you want something that blacks out all light or would you rather have something that is a little more translucent? Do you want fabric blinds, metal blinds or wooden blinds? What colour are you looking for?

Once you have answered all of these questions, it is time to measure your windows. If you have windows that are not a standard shape, you are going to have to consider getting custom blinds. Once you have all this info in hand, the time to look for your blinds has arrived. Enjoy.
